Day one: The tape

My first day on my first ever diet was surprisingly easy. What struck me was how content I was by eating so little. Even though my portion size was dramatically reduced, I was eating so frequently throughout the day I hardly noticed. I took "before" photos, one frontal and one side view. I'll post these later. And I took measurements. Even though my plan suggests these measurements are private, I've decided to share them here because my aim is to share what I've learned along the way. How I look now and how I measure up will change. The information I am gathering now will be used to compare how much I've grown, so to speak. Age at the start of the intervention: 34 years Weight at the start of the intervention: 288 lbs. Taking a zero

Thru-hikers are a rare breed. They choose to walk several miles on the same long-distance trail, end-to-end. It takes weeks, months for these courageous (foolish?) souls to complete there journey. For several days in a row, they wear the same clothes and eat the same package calorie-rich foods. Living in Oregon, I have at least heard of the Pacific Crest Trail , but thru-hikers get their kicks all over the globe. Because they walk every day, the miles really do add up. But what happens when they decide to stay in camp for a day? Or they leave the trail for a nearby town and replenish their stores? Or, worse, they become ill and cannot carry on? On those days, they don't walk any miles. That is where the term, "taking a zero," comes from. Whether they are compelled to or it's completely voluntary, they walk zero miles that day. When the levee breaks

This was a big week because after a long struggle to drop below an endless plateau, I dropped another two pounds! After the holidays I really lost some momentum and struggled in my mind about where I found myself. I kept knocking on the door, every week I hit the same low, but I could never dip below it. With a little help from my coach, we bust through! When we talked this morning, he shared with me how instructive this time will prove to be. Losing weight and getting healthy is not a linear journey. In the beginning, it was easy to shed the weight. But now the progress is slow and (dare I say it?) it has become work. The instructive part of this will become evident when I hit another rough patch. Needless to say, I don't ever want that to happen again but I understand that it may. Next time I will know how to respond better and I won't lose the battle of the mind.
